BIOGRAPHICAL DATA
Manuel Domínguez was born in Almería on December 5, 1954. Born into a family of painters, he is the son of painter Diego Domínguez, the brother of painter Diego Domínguez Velázquez de Castro, and the grandson, on his mother’s side, of painter Manuel Velázquez de Castro, who combined his artistic practice with his work as a pharmacist in the town of Zurgena (Almería).
From an early age he showed a strong inclination toward drawing and painting, taking part in open-air painting competitions in Almería during his childhood, where he received his first awards, firmly establishing his artistic vocation at an early stage. After completing his academic education, he moved to Valencia to study Fine Arts at the Escuela Superior de San Carlos, where he specialized in painting. Since then, he has maintained a continuous artistic practice, working primarily in oil, watercolor, and drawing, as well as in printmaking, a discipline he further developed at the School of Arts and Crafts in Almería under the guidance of printmaker José García Lomas.
Sculpture represents another of his principal areas of work, particularly portraiture, creating clay models that are later cast as bronze busts. During his time at the School of Arts and Crafts he met his wife, Carmen María Martínez, also a painter, with whom he shares a sustained dedication to working from life and to plein-air painting.
Throughout his career he has received numerous awards in both local and national competitions. In 1994 he was selected to participate in an exhibition of contemporary Spanish painting held at Vianden Castle (Luxembourg). Since then, he has maintained regular exhibition activity, presenting solo exhibitions in Almería and in cities such as Madrid, Valencia, Bilbao, Mallorca, and Granada, as well as in towns including El Ejido, Mundaka, Zurgena, and Almuñécar.
Alongside this work, he has produced several collections of graphic art focused on Almerian subjects, including a collection of drawings published in 1986 by La Voz de Almería, as well as the series of 25 lithographs Rincones de Almería a la acuarela. Other collections include Las Fuentes de Berja, Láminas de Roquetas de Mar, and Láminas de El Ejido, the latter executed using the pen-and-ink technique.
In recent decades he has continued to expand his production in both painting and sculpture, developing large-scale projects for public spaces alongside exhibitions in galleries and cultural institutions. He is currently engaged in new sculptural and pictorial projects, further extending his international presence through plein-air painting experiences in a variety of environments.
Among his most notable works are several monumental sculptures installed along the seafront promenade of Almería, now integrated into the city’s urban landscape, as well as various commemorative bronze busts located in public spaces, consolidating a career defined by coherence, experience, and continuous evolution.
